Best Breakfast in Beijing

Date February 22, 2010

We ate this beside the road as we were waiting for the school gates to open. We were early and hungry and it was cold. The only place that was open at 5:45AM in the dead of winter was not a place but a man with a mobile kitchen made from a converted oil drum.

Next to him was his wife (or we presume her to be) helping cut the vegetables and stock the cooked and ready to go bread in her own cart as he deftly prepared one big egg and veggie sandwich after another.

There was also a plethora of sauces nearby which we could help ourselves to and we did.

We were wondering about how cold the sandwiches would become in a matter of minutes so they wouldn’t be as nice, but this old timer obviously knew a lot more than we did. Within minutes of us gulping down our piping hot sandwiches, person after person walked past his mobile station and grabbed one to go.

Even though we’ve been back to Beijing countless times and even sat at famous restaurants with their opulent spreads, that day is still etched in my mind as the best breakfast ever.
